HISTORY

Twenty-first March 1976 was a red-letter day for the Pediatrician Community of Bangalore, for it was on this day that the Bangalore Pediatric Society, as The Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Bangalore-BPS was then called was established by a group of senior pediatricians with the following objectives.

  1. To promote scientific, pediatric medical and surgical knowledge in all its branches.
  2. To promote unity and comradeship amongst members of the Society.
  3. To conduct activities with an emphasis to promote child health in all aspects.

The founder president of the society was Dr.P.C.Bopaiah. Dr.D.G.Benakappa, Dr.Shamanthakamani, Dr.G.S.Mohan Reddy, Dr.N.M.Thimmarayappa, Dr.K.R.Sreemurthy, Dr.P.L.Mohanamba, Dr.B.V.Ramalinga Setty, Dr.B.S.Panduranga, Dr.P.S.Mallesh and Dr.Shivananda played key roles during the formative years of the society. The Society flourished and grew from strength to strength adhering to the objectives put forth by its founders.

In 1994 the need for having a city branch of Indian academy of Pediatrics (IAP) was expressed by the Karnataka State Branch of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) and the Central IAP. After extensive deliberation during the 17th Annual General Body Meeting of the BPS it was decided to change the name of Bangalore Pediatric Society to Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Bangalore - BPS.

Thus from the year 1995 the Society is called The Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Bangalore - BPS.

The society now has a life membership of more than 550.
